Dad Shoots Teen’s Laptop Over Facebook Post, Puts Video on YouTube

Well…this is one way for adults to leverage the power of YouTube. Still trying decide if this is a story appropriate to share with students… [EF]

The disgruntled teenage daughter of a tech-savvy, gun-toting father just got a very public lesson in respecting one’s elders.

“That right there is your laptop,” the father, named Tommy Jordan, says in a YouTube video while pointing a video camera at a computer laying in a patch of dirt and grass. “This right here is my .45,” he says, moving a pistol into the frame.

He cocks the weapon and shoots nine exploding hollow-point rounds into the laptop.

Okay, rewind.

What Are Kids Learning from TV Characters?

When it comes to sex, violence, drinking, bullying, and other sensitive topics, you want messages about right and wrong to come from you — not, say, Snooki from Jersey Shore.

But surprisingly, Snooki might be more of an ally than you think. Talking about TV characters and their choices can be a great way to start conversations with your kids about their own behavior. We encourage you to get familiar with the characters kids are watching — whether you love or hate them — and sneak in a little parental direction between Snooki’s visits to the bar….

Perhaps as we enter the middle of the month you’re finding yourself looking for resources.  This blog is a great path into the pages and treasures of National Geographic. [EF]

Clara Lazen, Ten-Year-Old Fifth Grader, Discovers New Molecule

So many directions to take this – instructional lesson, inspiration to students (girls in science?), reminder to us adults about the power of student-led activities…. [EF]

Now that Clara Lazen of Kansas City, Mo. has been published in a major chemistry journal, she can set her sights on a new goal: graduating elementary school. How did she do it? The 10-year-old was experimenting with a molecule-building toy during a class assignment when she stumbled upon an unusual-looking molecule.

Through Explania I have just discovered a great collection of short video explanations of important topics in economics. Investopedia has a great YouTube channel in which they explain in two minutes or less concepts like inflation, stocks, and dividends. I’ve embedded a couple Investopedia explanations below….
