Apple Unveils E-Textbook Strategy for K-12

Apple Inc. announced aggressive new efforts yesterday to move into the K-12 electronic-textbook market, though educational publishers said the biggest news from the move is how the normally disruptive company is likely to help the publishing industry rather than challenge it.

Through a partnership with three major K-12 textbook publishers—McGraw-Hill, Pearson, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt—Apple is offering interactive textbooks through its iBooks store at $14.99 or less. The textbooks feature multimedia elements, including video, three-dimensional graphics, and photo galleries. They also allow students to highlight text to create flashcards and search within a glossary.

Ten skills every student should learn

Read. Write. Be Accountable. Be Happy.  Would all four of these be in your list of “top ten skills” your students should learn?  These ten are based on a survey compiled by the editors of eSchool News…

“If you could choose only one, what’s the skill you’d like every student to learn?” Perhaps surprisingly, while many readers did cite critical thinking as a skill every student needs, another skill was listed nearly twice as much as all other responses combined.  Need a hint? It’s a skill every student has needed since the days of the one-room schoolhouse…

Do schools need a longer school day?

Some background information the next time someone says, “our problem is that we just don’t have enough time in the school day…”

A policy brief released last month concluded that contrary to popular perception, most U.S. public schools require at least as much or even more instructional time for students than countries touted for their high performance on international tests, including Finland, Japan and South Korea. There were a lot of caveats in the report but the thrust of the brief was that calls for a longer instructional day for children in the United States to match what students in other countries get may be misguided.

Whom We Admit, What We Deny

Provocative assertions from a famous provocateur…what Alfie Kohn has to say about selective admissions.

“Send us winners and we’ll make winners out of them.”— James Moffett

What does it mean when a school, having rejected a child who applied for admission, explains that he or she just “isn’t a good fit” (or “match”) with the school? In some cases, sure, the phrase would seem appropriate — for example, if there’s a marked discrepancy between the school’s and the family’s religious orientations, or if the school is committed to progressive education while the parents demand grades, quizzes, worksheets, and traditional discipline….

The organization offers all sorts of resources (note: some for sale), but best of all, their links to Character Ed related web sites is both comprehensive and manageable at the same time.

Whether it’s GivaGetas, iSafe or the Why Try Organization, this list is worth reviewing.
